Description

Salud! reviews the enormously valuable contribution of the volunteers who left Britain to serve with the Republican Medical Services during the Spanish Civil War. Acknowledgement is given to the immense effort and self-sacrifice made by men and women from all walks of life who, working ceaselessly in the rearguard, made it possible for the medical teams to function in Spain. Such was the case in Britain where, in spite of the government's official policy of non-intervention, there was a campaign of fervent support for the legitimate Republican government. The first British Medical Unit in Spain had immense political significance for the Spanish Republic. Barely a month into the start of the civil war and this small group was the first visible sign of international support. It would later become part of the Republican Medical Service and, within that, of the Medical Service of the International Brigades. Not only did volunteers help to create and to maintain an emergency medical service, some of the individuals involved were also responsible for important developments that were of relevance to later military-medical practice and also to the history of medicine in general. Medical personnel generally worked in dreadful conditions, for hours and even days without rest, and with a lack of equipment and provisions of all kinds. They were mostly young and inexperienced men and women who suddenly found themselves thrown together in desperate circumstances, with the task of salvaging something of life amidst the inhumanity and mayhem. That they rose to the challenge is, in itself, worthy of tribute. Published in association with the Canada Blanch Centre for Contemporary Spanish.

Much has been published about the Spanish Civil War detailing the causes, politics and battles during this tragic period of Spanish history.Linda Palfreeman's new book - ¡Salud! (Sussex Academic Press) provides a completely different aspect relating to another huge element of the war - that of the Republican medical services which worked so hard to treat the wounded with support from British organisations. Her main focus is how the British volunteers, from all walks of life, left Britain and travelled to Spain to offer their knowledge and services to help the fight against fascism by establishing Republican medical units from a virtually non-existent service following the defection of army doctors to the Nationalist side.Palfreeman's book gives a well researched detailed account including many firsthand comments both from the actual participants and quotes from official records enabling readers to understand how their initial efforts were organised and received through too becoming a more organised integral part of the overall war effort under the International Brigades.Whilst she explains technical medical aspects, including how lots of new surgical procedures etc were created out of forced necessity in response to the new type of war fare with its aerial bombardments and more powerful weaponry developed since WW1, she also covers the important human aspects of working under appalling conditions in a foreign country in international teams. These factors combine to make this insightful book a powerful contribution to the range of works on the Spanish Civil War.The final chapters take us chronologically through all the major battles culminating in the final Republican defeat. Their heroic efforts left a legacy of accumulated medical expertise and knowledge which later became of so much use in the Second World War.Salud is superbly researched, written, referenced and indexed which has left me not only with a far greater knowledge but also in awe of those brave and courageous volunteers.
